Mike Shanahan: Signing with Browns was in RG3's 'best interest'

Robert Griffin III experienced great success as a rookie under Mike Shanahan in 2012, setting multiple records and guiding the Washington Redskins to the playoffs.

As Griffin looks to revive his career, Shanahan thinks his former pupil made the right decision by signing with the Cleveland Browns.

"I was thinking that in Robert's best interest, he needed to go to a place where the head coach had the background of running different style offenses," Shanahan told The MMQB's Jenny Vrentas. "When you take a look at Robert's background, and what he was able to accomplish in 2012, there was no quarterback that played as well as he did that year. I thought that going to a system that accentuated what he did in 2012 would give him the ability to get back to where he was.

" ... I think Robert, if he gets with the right system, and accentuates his positives, he can do some of the things he did in 2012, even though he really hasn't taken a lot of snaps in the last two and a half years."

Asked what the key is for Griffin to have long-term success in the NFL, Shanahan said he must do what Browns head coach Hue Jackson believes will best utilize his talents.

"Robert is going to have to be all-in, and he should be right now, given the fact that his options are limited," Shanahan said. "Hue will make that decision, and Robert has to buy in. If he doesn't buy in, then Robert will be out of the league."

As for his own future, Shanahan, who interviewed for several coach openings this offseason, said he's still interested in working in the NFL.

"The more I look at it, I think I could help a team more at this point in my career as a consultant," he said. "Not as a head coach, but helping ownership put a team together, because you do feel you have an eye for what it takes to win a championship."
