Vikings trade up to select TE David Morgan in 6th round

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The Minnesota Vikings have traded up to select tight end David Morgan out of Texas-San Antonio in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

In moving up to the No. 188-overall slot, the Vikings sent the No. 196 and No. 240-overall picks to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Morgan is a balanced tight end prospect whose ability as a receiver and blocker should allow him to challenge for a reserve role behind starter Kyle Rudolph.

David Morgan Bio

Position: TE
School: Texas-South Antonio
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-4

Strengths

  • One of the most complete tight ends available in the draft. Had 45 receptions for 566 yards and five touchdowns in 2015 and was a force as a run-blocker.
  • Tough after the catch.
  • Sure-handed, with only three drops on 68 opportunities in his final two seasons at Texas-San Antonio. (Pro Football Focus)

Weaknesses

  • Heavy-footed with underwhelming straight-line speed. Posted the worst 40-yard dash time of the nine tight ends who competed at the scouting combine.
  • Will need to improve his route-running at the NFL level.
  • Didn't face stiff competition in college.
