Seahawks add TE Nick Vannett in 3rd round

Matthew Emmons-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The Seattle Seahawks have selected tight end Nick Vannett out of Ohio State in the third round of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Vannett can contribute in the passing game, but he's also an excellent blocker. That should free up opportunities for fellow tight end Jimmy Graham to focus on the passing game.

The Seahawks love to run the football and Vannett gives them another solid blocker to free up holes for Thomas Rawls, who should see a heavier workload this year with Marshawn Lynch retired.

Nick Vannett Bio

Position: TE
School: Ohio State
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-6
Weight: 260 lbs.

Strengths

  • Tough, physical tight end who's able to make difficult catches in traffic.
  • Good combination of size and athleticism, with long limbs and big hands.
  • Deceptive speed for his size. Posted 40-yard dash times of 4.85 and 4.9 seconds at Ohio State's pro day.
  • Well-rounded. Excels at blocking and can contribute to the passing game.

Weaknesses

  • Took a step back statistically in 2015, finishing with 19 receptions for 162 yards and no touchdowns after catching 19 passes for 220 yards and five touchdowns the previous season.
  • Needs to improve his route running to create better separation.
  • Limited starting experience. Only started three of the 40 games he appeared in during his first three seasons with the Buckeyes.
