Peyton Manning is headed home.

The Indianapolis Colts will hold a press conference Friday to honor the recently retired quarterback, with both owner Jim Irsay and Manning set to speak at noon.

However, Manning is unable to retire as a member of the Colts, as the Denver Broncos placed him on the reserve/retired list.

Manning was the first overall pick by the Colts in 1998 NFL Draft, and quickly became the face of the franchise, spending 14 seasons with the team and helping them win their second Super Bowl title in 2006.

The Colts have long made it known they wished for Manning to return to Indianapolis when he decided to finally hang up his cleats, despite the less-than-ideal circumstances of his release in 2012.

"I told him (after the AFC Championship) I hope you can feel the energy of (Indianapolis) pulling for you," Irsay said about his conversation with Manning prior to Super Bowl 50, according to Kevin Bowen of the Colts' official site.

"I told (Manning), we would love to have him in here to retire as a Colt. We would love it. I told him, 'That airplane is waiting for you. The red carpet is clean and lined for you.' We would be honored to have him come home…

"That would be really special."

Manning retired on March 7 after 18 seasons in the NFL, riding off into the sunset after capturing Super Bowl 50.
