Report: Jaguars' Beachum's 1-year, $4.5M deal contains 4-year option worth $40M

Offensive tackle Kelvin Beachum officially signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Wednesday, and his initial contract was reported to be a one-year, $4.5-million deal.

However, the more notable part of the contract is that it also contains a four-year team option worth an additional $40 million, a source told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

The former seventh-round pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers tore his ACL last season, so the structure of the contract makes sense for Jacksonville.

It's unclear if Beachum will be ready for the start of the season, or if he'll return to the form that made him one of the most promising young tackles in the game.

If the 26-year-old does return healthy and productive, the team will then have the option to lock him up for another four years at a reasonable contract.

If not, then they can to move on from him after 2016 with no financial impact.

Beachum is thought to be in competition with former first-round pick Luke Joeckel for the starting left tackle position, and with the additional money available in this contract, it appears he could be well compensated if he wins the starting job.
