Cardinals' Mathieu offers to help Manziel overcome issues

At least one person still believes Johnny Manziel can triumph over his demons and reach his full potential.

That person is Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu, who overcame substance abuse issues while at LSU to become an NFL star.

Mathieu offered a helping hand to Manziel on his Twitter account Friday, one day after allegations Manziel assaulted his ex-girlfriend and threatened suicide were made public:

Mathieu was kicked out of LSU's program in August 2012 after reportedly failing multiple drug tests. He entered rehab days later, and was arrested for marijuana possession in October 2012.

The Cardinals took a chance on Mathieu, selecting him in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The risk paid off, as he has blossomed into one of the NFL's best and most versatile defenders - and the off-field troubles that plagued him in college have evaporated.

Mathieu overcame a torn ACL suffered in 2013 and is currently rehabbing a second torn ACL suffered in December.
