Report: Kaepernick seeking release from 49ers, wants to play for Jets

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick wants to become New York Jets quarterback Colin Kaepernick, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The Jets are intrigued by Kaepernick's interest but remain in the early stages of offseason planning, Mehta adds.

Kaepernick suffered through a down season with the 49ers, punctuated by his placement on injured reserve with a shoulder injury, but things appeared to be looking up for the 2011 second-round pick with the 49ers' hiring of Chip Kelly as head coach. Kaepernick appears to be a great fit for Kelly's scheme.

Despite this, Mehta reports Kaepernick wants out of San Francisco and the Big Apple is his preferred destination.

There are several major impediments between Kaepernick leaving the 49ers and joining the Jets, including Kaepernick's contract (he has five years left on the $114-million extension signed in 2014, though it includes several team-friendly outs) and the Jets' stated desire to retain 2015 starter Ryan Fitzpatrick.
