Bill O'Brien: Sticking with struggling Hoyer was 'right thing to do'

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien said he chose not to bench struggling quarterback Brian Hoyer in Saturday's wild-card loss to the Kansas City Chiefs because it would've been wrong to do so.

"I named him the starter," O'Brien said postgame, according to ESPN. "With the game plan and the amount of reps that (backup Brandon Weeden) had gotten during the week, which was basically nil, I felt like the right thing to do was stick with Hoyer."

Hoyer turned the ball over five times and the Texans were shut out in the game.

O'Brien admitted he briefly considered a quarterback change at the end of the third quarter, and Weeden confirmed that possibility was discussed.

"We had talked about me going in there with Brian," Weeden said. "Brian wanted to finish the thing out. I don't blame him. I've been in that situation before. It's the kind of person he is. He's a competitor. Felt like he wanted to finish the fight with his guys."
