Patriots' Dion Lewis out for season with torn ACL

Greg M. Cooper / USA TODAY Sports

New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis will miss the remainder of the 2015 season with a torn ACL suffered in Sunday's game against the Washington Redskins, according to the team.

Lewis was a breakout star through the first half of the season, emerging as one of the club's most versatile weapons and totaling 622 yards from scrimmage.

The Pitt product struggled to stay healthy in each of his first three seasons after joining the Philadelphia Eagles as a fifth-round pick in 2011. He was out of football entirely in 2014 as a result.

With LeGarrette Blount continuing to see work as the Patriots' early-down back, James White and Brandon Bolden will be candidates to step into the role Lewis held on passing downs.

The 25-year-old Lewis is under contract with New England through the 2017 season after signing an extension earlier this year.
