Report: Darren McFadden likely to start for Cowboys vs. Giants

Tim Heitman / USA TODAY Sports

If you spent a third-round pick on Dallas Cowboys running back Joseph Randle in your fantasy draft, you may want to sit down before reading any further.

Darren McFadden is likely to start the team's season opener against the New York Giants, according to Clarence Hill of the Star Telegram, and the Cowboys could be preparing to unleash a heavy dose of him.

McFadden won't be on a pitch count, Hill writes, indicating the Cowboys aren't worried about too many carries increasing McFadden's risk of injury.

It's difficult to argue McFadden isn't the most talented runner on the Cowboys' roster, but he rarely made it through the regular season unscathed while with the Oakland Raiders. Serious concerns about McFadden's ability to hold up to a full workload persist.

Ultimately, Dallas is likely to employ some sort of timeshare between McFadden, Randle, and either Lance Dunbar or recent trade acquisition Christine Michael.

McFadden may be the starter by name, but there's no guarantee he'll be tasked with carrying the ball for even half of the Cowboys' total rushing attempts.
