Eagles' Chip Kelly on DeMarco Murray's usage: 'I wanted to have 2 running backs'

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly doesn't care about your fantasy football team.

Kelly addressed the issue of starting running back DeMarco Murray's usage in a conversation with Peter King of The MMQB, and said he's well aware that Murray touched the ball an NFL-high 449 times in 2014.

"I think there is a lot of validity to it," Kelly said, when asked about the prospect of limiting Murray's touches to keep the tailback fresh. "But how do you manage him going into a season? Our plan all along was to get another running back with him. I wanted to have two running backs, and that's why we got Ryan (Mathews). I don't think you can have a guy carry it 370 to 400 times per season and be successful. We're going to run it a lot - we always do - but we'll have more than one guy doing it."

The Eagles, who traded LeSean McCoy and then were spurned by Frank Gore this offseason, reportedly had a deal in place with Mathews when Murray suddenly became available to them.

Rather than pulling their offer to Mathews off the table, the Eagles simply signed both players.

It's easy to take Kelly at his word when he says both running backs will play a large role. Despite their reputation as a high-flying team, the Eagles orchestrate one of the NFL's most run-heavy offenses.
