Report: Jets to exercise Quinton Coples' 5th-year contract option

Quinton Coples appears set to remain in a New York Jets uniform for at least the next two seasons.

Betting on his continued development under a new coaching staff, the Jets will reportedly exercise the fifth-year option on Coples' rookie contract, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The option, which is guaranteed only for injury prior to the beginning of the new league year, would pay Coples $7.8 million for the 2016 campaign.

While a slow start to his career made it entirely possible that the Jets would opt against picking up the relatively expensive final season of the deal, Coples was a solid contributor in 2014, starting 15 of 16 games and recording 6.5 sacks.

Still just 24 years old, Coples could emerge as a candidate for a long-term contract should he thrive as an edge rusher in the Jets' blitz-heavy defensive scheme under new head coach Todd Bowles.
