The New Orleans Saints have selected offensive tackle Andrus Peat out of Stanford with the 13th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

New Orleans is clearly addressing its pass protection this offseason by adding center Max Unger in the Jimmy Graham deal, and now selecting Peat.

The Saints parted ways with Graham and Kenny Stills, leaving more pressure on Drew Brees to carry the load. For him to do that, the offensive line will have to keep him upright and Peat's efficiency in pass protection should help them in that regard.

Peat should be able to push Zach Strief and Terron Armstead for a starting job in 2015.

Strengths

  • Has the ideal size for an offensive tackle, with long arms, broad shoulders and a thick lower body. Also displays rare athleticism for a player his size and is light on his feet.
  • Generally shows good hand placement in both run blocking and pass protection.
  • Missed just one game due to injury during three seasons at Stanford.
  • Patient; waits for defenders to come to him.
  • Quick off the snap.
  • Could compete for a starting job at the NFL level right away.
  • Comes from a football family. His dad, Todd Peat, played seven seasons for the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals and Los Angeles Raiders, and his brother, Todd Peat Jr., is currently a defensive tackle at Nebraska.

Weaknesses

  • Some scouts have characterized him as soft and questioned whether he has a mean streak.
  • Has a tendency to lunge in pass protection.
  • Footwork and technique can be sloppy at times.
  • Occasionally bends at the waist and overextends.
  • Has the quickness and balance to get to the second level, but could improve on his ability to sustain blocks.
  • Doesn't take advantage of lower body strength.
  • Often plays too high.
  • Penalties could be an issue, as he had three against UCLA alone in 2014.
