Panthers' Jonathan Martin: 'My focus has always been moving forward to what's next'

Jonathan Martin is focused on the road ahead after being picked up off waivers by the Carolina Panthers. But as the central figure of the Miami Dolphins' 2013 bullying scandal, his past continues to follow him wherever he goes.

"That situation’s in the past. I don't think about it," Martin said during a conference call with local reporters Monday. "I try not to pay attention to headlines, positive or negative, either way.

"My focus has always been moving forward to what's next. After I've spent a year in San Francisco, I'm now with the Panthers, and I'm looking forward to my opportunity and making the most of it."

Carolina marks the third destination in four years for the offensive tackle. He reunited with his college coach, Jim Harbaugh, in San Francisco last season, but after Harbaugh's departure, the 49ers decided to part ways with Martin.

The Panthers signed Martin primarily as offensive-line depth, but he'll also improve the competition for presumed starters Michael Oher and Mike Remmers.

"I think (becoming a starter) is always your intention as a football player," Martin said. "If your goal isn't to be the best every time you step on the field, then you really have no business being in this business. I'm looking forward to competing with these guys and showing them what I can do."
