The Pittsburgh Steelers have selected outside linebacker Bud Dupree out of Kentucky with the 22nd overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.

Though still quite raw with his technique, Dupree's standout combine performance solidified his status as one of the more physically talented defensive players available in this class.

With Pittsburgh looking to recapture the type of defensive prowess that carried the club to success in year's past, Dupree fills a pressing need on the defensive edge.

Joining the Steelers should see him play the same 3-4 outside linebacker position he played in college, possibly aiding his transition to the NFL and allowing him to make the most of his impressive potential.

Strengths

  • Stood out at the combine with 4.56 40 time and 42-inch vertical jump. Excellent athlete.
  • Gets up the field quickly as an edge rusher, often blowing past bigger offensive tackles.
  • Pursues well sideline-to-sideline on plays run to the backside. Locates the ball fast and determines run versus pass situations quickly.
  • Can drop into zone coverage if needed and shows good instincts covering running backs out of the backfield.

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't always get the best jump off the ball. Could improve his first step and attack blockers quicker in run-stopping situations.
  • Struggles to shed offensive tackles if stonewalled on first move. Has difficulty escaping the grasp after engaging with blockers.
  • Plays too high at times. Needs to attack lower to gain a leverage advantage because of his size.
