In an offseason that's seen the Buffalo Bills move all their proverbial chips in, hoping to end the NFL's longest playoff drought, the team is strapped for cap space entering the 2015 campaign.

General manager Doug Whaley said Tuesday that the Bills are essentially finished pursuing free agents, except those they can sign on minimum salaries.

One such player the Bills may pursue is inside linebacker Brandon Spikes, who suited up for the club in a rotational role in 2014. Spikes is known as a run-stopping specialist and is often substituted on obvious passing downs.

"We're going to reach out to him and I'm going to call him when I get back," Whaley told ESPN's Mike Rodak. "Does it fit what we're offering and where he is in his career? We would love to have him back but again, it's got to be a fit on both parts."

Spikes recorded 54 tackles, one forced fumble and a sack in his lone campaign with the Bills. He signed a one-year, $3.25-million deal with the Bills in March of 2014.

The 27-year-old hasn't garnered much attention in free agency, but could be a valuable addition for teams who need to improve their run defense.
