Days before Darrelle Revis agreed to terms with the New York Jets, the NFL sent an investigator to the team's facility to interrogate general manager Mike Maccagnan and front office personnel about the pursuit of the cornerback, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

The investigator visited the Jets on March 8, which fell within the three-day window teams had to negotiate with players before the official start of free agency, Mehta reports. Owner Woody Johnson, who admitted publicly in December that he would love to have Revis back, was not interviewed.

The New England Patriots filed a tampering charge against the Jets shortly after Johnson made those comments, but Mehta reports that the owner's praise had nothing to do with Revis's decision to part ways with the Super Bowl champions.

Mehta also reports that the Patriots were out of the running for Revis a full day before he agreed to a five-year, $70-million deal with the Jets.
