Analysis:

The workout was apparently conducted with Petty taking most or all of the snaps from under center. While the numbers look awfully good, it's hard to take quarterback pro day workouts all that seriously these days, especially after Teddy Bridgewater easily outdid all other rookie quarterbacks in 2014 after drawing criticism for his pro day workout. Moreover, the negatives Petty displayed as Baylor's starter the last two years shouldn't be omitted because of an adequate showing in a workout setting that doesn't really resemble competitive football. At 6-foot-3, 230 pounds and with above average athleticism, Petty certainly has some foundational NFL quarterback traits, and he was very productive as a two-year starter at Baylor. Petty showed a concerning lack of downfield accuracy at times, though, and the Baylor system has proven extremely favorable for its quarterbacks when it comes to college production. Perhaps the most significant concern with Petty is his advanced age -- he'll be 24 years old in May, meaning he couldn't earn a starting job at Baylor until he was roughly 22.5 years old. You'd ideally see a drafted quarterback already on an NFL roster at that point. By contrast, UCLA's Brett Hundley started and excelled at the age of 19. It's worth mentioning that the quarterback who started ahead of Petty was Nick Florence, who retired after leaving Baylor but did not receive serious consideration as a quarterback prospect. For whatever reason, there's still a growing belief that Petty might be the third quarterback selected after Jameis Winston and Marcus Mariota. We're not sure why he merits a selection before the fourth round.
