Report: NFL won't vote on changes to catch rules, expanded playoffs
The NFL Competition Committee will hear proposals for more than 20 rule changes at next week's league meetings.
Some will be wacky, like the Indianapolis Colts' proposal for nine-point touchdowns. Others will be familiar, like the New England Patriots' annual proposal for fixed cameras to be placed on the goal line. Can anyone explain why the league hasn't passed that one yet?
But no rule proposals will be more significant than two that are absent this year.
The NFL will not vote on altering the rules for catches (the infamous "Calvin Johnson rule"), nor will it vote on expanding the playoff field from 12 teams, according to multiple reports.
What does and doesn't constitute a catch is a constant frustration for fans and players alike. Just ask Dez Bryant, whose non-catch was crucial in the Dallas Cowboys' playoff loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Expanding the playoff field is reportedly on the agenda for debate at the meetings, but no vote is planned. The league is believed to favor expanding from 12 to 14 playoff teams and adding two additional games in the Wild Card round.
