Monday's Sports In Brief

WOMEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

UConn's journey to a third straight national championship will begin at home.

The Huskies were seeded first overall in the tournament and tops in the Albany Region, in search of a 10th overall title that would tie Geno Auriemma with UCLA men's coach John Wooden for most all-time.

UConn will open up Saturday against St. Francis, Brooklyn, which is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Terriers (15-17) are the 10th team to enter the NCAAs with a losing record.

Joining the Huskies as top seeds were Maryland, South Carolina and Notre Dame in the 64-team tournament that begins Friday.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) Andy Landers is retiring following 36 seasons as the only full-time coach in the history of the Georgia women's program.

Landers is stepping down following a season in which he recorded his 850th career win with the Lady Bulldogs. Georgia lost nine of its last 11 games to finish 19-12.

BASEBALL

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Pete Rose has submitted a new request to be reinstated to baseball.

Rose agreed to a lifetime ban in August 1989 following an investigation for Major League Baseball by outside lawyer John Dowd that concluded the career hits leader bet on the Reds to win while managing the team. Rose applied for reinstatement in September 1997 and met in November 2002 with Commissioner Bud Selig, who never ruled on the application.

Rob Manfred succeeded Selig in January. Manfred said he intends to communicate with Rose's representatives and talk about how to handle the process.

FORT MYERS, Fla. (AP) - New York Mets pitcher Zack Wheeler has a torn elbow ligament, a blow to a team hoping to compete for the playoffs following Matt Harvey's return from Tommy John surgery.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Wheeler has a complete tear, all but guaranteeing the 24-year-old right-hander will need elbow ligament-replacement surgery and miss the 2015 season.

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) - Cliff Lee was placed on the 60-day disabled list by the Philadelphia Phillies to attempt to rehabilitate an elbow injury without surgery.

The team announced that an operation was recommended. Lee has a torn common flexor tendon and was told last week to stop throwing in spring training.

He will be sent home to rest and begin a rehabilitation program. It's the third time he will try to recover from the injury non-surgically. The 2008 AL Cy Young Award winner is in the final season of a $125 million, five-year contract.

GOODYEAR, Ariz. (AP) - Cleveland Indians pitcher Gavin Floyd will have surgery on a fractured bone in his right elbow and could miss the season. Floyd missed most of last season with Atlanta with the same injury.

PRO FOOTBALL

Tim Tebow worked out for the Philadelphia Eagles, two people familiar with the session told The Associated Press. Both people spoke on condition of anonymity because the workout was not made public. One of the sources said Tebow worked out at quarterback and left the facility without discussing a contract.

Tebow has not been on an NFL team since the 2012 season. He was released by the Jets, then attended training camp in the summer of 2013 with the Patriots, who cut him.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - The San Francisco 49ers announced linebacker Chris Borland is retiring after one season. Borland told ESPN's ''Outside the Lines'' that he is retiring following his standout rookie season because of concerns about head trauma.

The 24-year-old Borland had a team-leading 108 tackles in his stellar rookie season, emerging as a punishing defender. He also had a sack and two interceptions.

It was yet another blow to a team that lost coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio after the season, then watched Frank Gore, Mike Iupati, Chris Culliver and Perrish Cox depart in free agency.

Borland's big announcement came less than a week after five-time All-Pro linebacker Patrick Willis walked away from football, too.

HOUSTON (AP) - Longtime New England nose tackle Vince Wilfork signed with the Houston Texans. The 33-year-old has spent his entire 11-year career with the Patriots. Houston also signed wide receiver Cecil Shorts III, who led the Jaguars with 53 catches last season for 577 yards.

PRO BASKETBALL

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Thunder forward Serge Ibaka will be out indefinitely with lingering soreness in his right knee.

A team spokesman said the Thunder consulted with Ibaka's representation and they agreed to have him see a specialist in New York. Ibaka has missed the past three games. He was playing well before that, averaging 17.1 points and 9.4 rebounds since the All-Star break and shooting 55 percent from the field. The team still is missing reigning MVP Kevin Durant, out with pain in his right foot.
