Charles Clay: Receives Transition Tag

The Dolphins have placed their transition tag on Clay, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports.

Analysis:

The transition tag gives Miami the right to match any contract that Clay signs with another team. It's somewhat cheaper than the franchise tag, with the number for tight ends approximately $7.07 million. The Dolphins hope to sign Clay to a long-term deal, but this does leave open the possibility that the tight end could end up elsewhere. However, it would likely take an overpay to pry him away from the Dolphins.
