Way-Back Playback: Scott Norwood goes wide right

The foundation of the suffering Buffalo Bills fans feel can be traced back to one thing: the right leg of Scott Norwood.

Buffalo took on the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV back in 1991 - their first of four straight trips to the big game.

The Bills were heavily favored, thanks to a high-flying, no-huddle offense led by Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly. Buffalo was capable of scoring points in bunches, so Bill Parcells and the Giants had their work cut out for them.

New York, though, had a plan.

Defensive coordinator Bill Belichick did an excellent job of implementing a game plan to frustrate the Bills, and the Giants offense went to work controlling the clock.

Despite holding the ball for more than 40 minutes, the Giants held a slim 20-19 lead with less than two minutes to play. The Bills final drive set up Norwood for a game-winning kick.

In a vacuum, a missed 47-yard field goal isn't shocking, kickers miss them all the time. However, with the Super Bowl on the line, it was all the more painful for Bills fans.

Who knows what a victory could have snowballed into for that talented Bills squad. Instead, they lost the next three Super Bowls, and some fans believe they have been cursed ever since Norwood's miss.
