NFC East Notebook: Cowboys clinch NFC East, Eagles eliminated from contention

Every Monday and Friday, theScore's NFL editors will bring you a roundup of everything you need to know from around the division with the NFC East Notebook.

Dallas Cowboys

Cowboys clinch NFC East. The Cowboys clinched the NFC East for the first time since 2009 with a 42-7 decimation of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon.

Is Romo the NFL MVP? General manager/owner Jerry Jones and a growing group of Cowboys' players say that pigskin cannon Tony Romo should be in consideration for the NFL MVP award.

"Hell yeah, he is. He's the MVP," No. 1 receiver Dez Bryant said. "Look at the performance. He's giving 'em hell in December. Icing on the cake. Give it to him. He's doing a hell of a job."

Romo: Jason Garrett is underrated. According to Romo, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is the best coach in the NFL that nobody talks about.

"He’s as good of a coach as I’ve ever been around," Romo told ESPN. "He’s special."

Philadelphia Eagles

Eagles' eliminated from playoff contention. The Cowboys' destruction of the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday afternoon was the final nail in the Eagles' playoff coffin.

Ertz sets franchise record. Tight end Zach Ertz caught a franchise record 15 passes during the Eagles' 27-24 loss to the Washington Redskins on Saturday. Ertz, of course, would rather have the win than the record.

"I would take one catch - zero catches even - for a win," Ertz told Philly.com. "I hate ... losing and it's really tough to be in this situation right now."

Curry blames himself. Defensive end Vinny Curry, who was penalized multiple times for late hits on Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III on Saturday, blames himself for the loss.

New York Giants

Coughlin wants Beckham Jr. to tone down his celebrations. Odell Beckham Jr. was electric once again for the Giants on Sunday, hauling in 8 passes for 148 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

There was one part of his game that head coach Tom Coughlin wasn't impressed with.

"He finally got flagged for his celebration," Coughlin told The New York Daily News. "That was an issue, because here we are kicking off from the 20-yard line and they got the ball with great field (position)."

Beckham Jr. exchanges texts with Jordan. Odell's not just turning heads in the football world, as the rookie phenom is now trading text messages with His Royal Airness, Michael Jordan.

McClain calls Rams 'dirty'. Linebacker Jameel McClain felt the Rams were targeting Beckham Jr. with cheap shots all afternoon.

Washington Redskins

Gruden and RG3 to return next season? After a season's worth of speculation, it appears both Robert Griffin III and head coach Jay Gruden will be back with the Redskins next season.

Jackson mocks Eagles. Redskins wide receiver DeSean Jackson mocked the Eagles after Saturday's victory with a ridiculous wing-flap dance(?).

Jackson torched his former team for 126 yards on four catches.

Gruden measures QB success with wins and losses. According to Jay Gruden, a quarterback should be judged by his win-loss record, and not necessarily by the individual numbers they amass.

"That is the No. 1 factor, and that is it," Gruden told ESPN. "Obviously you look at the production and all that stuff, and what he could've done maybe, but winning football games is the only thing that matters to me for a quarterback."
