AFC West Notebook: Broncos testing depth ahead of playoffs; Carr wants Sparano back

Denver Broncos

Broncos testing out depth ahead of playoffs. With three players landing on injured reserve in the past week and several others nursing various ailments, the Broncos have had an opportunity to test their depth.

Roby blossoming. While not technically a starter, Broncos rookie cornerback Bradley Roby has been leaned on heavily.

Welker once whaled on a dog. ESPN The Magazine sat down with Wes Welker recently to discuss his career, concussions and retirement, and discovered this interesting tidbit:

WHEN HE WAS A BOY, Welker had a rabbit named Thumper. He loved chasing him around the yard and feeding him. One day, the neighbor's dog got loose and slipped into the Welkers' yard, and that was the end of Thumper. A few days later, Welker told his brother, Lee, he'd waited until no one was watching, sneaked into the neighbors' yard and whaled on that dog. He was 7 years old.

Kansas City Chiefs

Chiefs look to overcome Pittsburgh curse. The Chiefs may need some luck on their side Sunday when they travel to Pittsburgh, where they haven't won in nearly 30 years.

Avant making impression. Jason Avant's professional attitude has earned him the respect of his new teammates.

Haley thankful for time in Kansas City. Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Todd Haley holds no grudge against the Chiefs following his bitter dismissal as head coach.

San Diego Chargers

Chargers staying put for 2015. The Chargers have decided not to exercise the termination clause in their Qualcomm Stadium lease, and will be staying in San Diego (for 2015, at least).

Rivers 'outstanding' in practice. After missing practice a day earlier with a back injury, Philip Rivers had what head coach Mike McCoy called an "outstanding" session Thursday.

Oakland Raiders

Injuries take toll on Raiders' defense. The Raiders have lost nine defensive players to season-ending injuries, which interim head coach Tony Sparano admits has taken a toll on the team.

Carr wants Sparano back. Rookie quarterback Derek Carr said he wants the currently-interim Sparano to return as the team's full-time coach next season.

Harbaugh-to-Oakland rumors picking up steam. Despite receiving an offer from Michigan worth a reported $48 million over six years, Jim Harbaugh is intrigued by the Raiders head coaching job, Boston Globe's Ben Volin tells 98.5 The Sports Hub.
