Texans place Ryan Mallett on season-ending IR

The Houston Texans placed Ryan Mallett on injured reserve Wednesday, officially bringing an end to his 2014 season.

The 26-year-old had recently taken over for Ryan Fitzpatrick as the starting quarterback until a pectoral injury suffered in Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals forced him to undergo surgery.

Fitzpatrick returns to the starting role with Mallett's injury, but the Texans also signed free-agent quarterback Thad Lewis for additional depth at the position.
