Chargers fend off Rams' late effort for 2nd straight win

Robert Hanashiro / USA TODAY Sports

The San Diego Chargers stopped a valiant effort from the St. Louis Rams, holding on for a 27-24 victory.

San Diego moved to 7-4 with the victory and remain in the middle of the AFC playoff race.

St. Louis dropped to 4-7 with the loss, killing any faint hope of appearing in the playoffs.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Janoris Jenkins picked off Philip Rivers in the red zone and returned it for a 99-yard touchdown, giving the Rams a 10-3 lead. St. Louis held a 10-6 lead at halftime.
  • Kenny Britt appeared to a score a 49-yard touchdown to give the Rams a 17-3 lead, but it was called back due to holding.
  • Ryan Mathews scored on a 32-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, giving the Chargers a 13-10 lead. Mathews ran for 105 yards on 12 carries and briefly left the game with an apparent shoulder injury.
  • Keenan Allen lost two fumbles at critical junctures of the game, helping an anemic Rams' offense find its legs. However, Allen redeemed himself on a 29-yard touchdown, extending the Chargers lead to 27-17. Allen led the Chargers in receiving with six catches for 104 yards and the touchdown.
  • Stedman Bailey caught a touchdown pass with 2:04 remaining, cutting the lead to 27-24. Bailey had a game-high seven catches for a team-leading 89 yards.
  • Rivers went 29-of-35 for 291 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He wasn't operating with the clinical efficiency he exhibited earlier in the year, but was good enough for the Chargers to record the win.
  • Shaun Hill struggled immensely for the Rams, going 18-of-35 for 198 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. St. Louis struggled to move the ball down field and Hill was the culprit.
