2006 - Albert Haynesworth stomps Andre Gurode

Tennessee Titans' defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth kicks Andre Gurode's helmet off and scrapes his cleat across the Dallas Cowboys center's head. Gurode requires 30 stitches to seal the cuts left by the stomp and is left with blurry vision.

On top of being ejected from the game, the NFL suspends Haynesworth a then-unprecedented five games for the an on-field infraction. The talented, yet troubled, Haynesworth goes on to receive a seven year $115 million dollar contract from the Washington Redskins in 2009. By 2012 he is out of the league.

2002 - Randy Moss charged for marijuana possession

Randy Moss, star wide receiver with the Minnesota Vikings, is charged after an officer on foot attempts to stop his vehicle from making an illegal turn. Moss bumps the officer with his car, injuring her slightly, and is then found to be in possession of less than a gram of marijuana.

The 2002 season is the first in which Moss does not record double-digit touchdowns and is statistically the worst season he has during his time in Minnesota. The incident contributes to the perception of Moss as being troubled off the field.

2001 - Monday Night Football returns to NYC after 9/11

The game between the San Francisco 49ers and the New York Jets is the first Monday night game played in the New York City area since the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001.

A stirring tribute to the rescue workers at the World Trade Center site takes place before the game at Giants Stadium, which San Francisco goes on to win 19-17.
