Panthers looking to add running back as insurance

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

With DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart, Fozzy Whittaker and Mike Tolbert all nursing injuries, the Carolina Panthers are in need of some desperate help at the running back position.

Head coach Ron Rivera is hopeful Whittaker will be back at practice this week, but said Monday that the Panthers will look at a couple of free-agent running backs as "insurance policy."

Williams is considered doubtful for Sunday, while Stewart's status is still unknown. Tolbert was placed on IR-recall, which means the earliest he can return is Nov. 30 against the Minnesota Vikings.

BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Michael Bush, LaMichael James, Mikel Leshoure and LaRod Stephens-Howling are just some of the running backs available on the open market.
