The Minnesota Vikings placed quarterback Matt Cassel on injured reserve Wednesday, ending his season.

Cassel suffered a fractured foot in the Vikings' 20-9 loss to the New Orleans Saints after taking a big hit from linebacker Curtis Lofton and safety Kenny Vaccaro.

First-round pick Teddy Bridgewater will take over starting duties from Cassel, with Christian Ponder as his backup.

The Vikings also announced Wednesday that they have promoted tight end Chase Ford and offensive lineman Austin Wentworth to the active roster, and signed quarterback McLeod Bethel-Thompson and tight end Ryan Otten to the practice squad.

In three games this season, Cassel completed 41-of-71 passes for 425 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
