Cardinals GM expects John Abraham to report to camp 'sooner than next week'
The Arizona Cardinals could get a boost to their pass rush in the next few days as outside linebacker John Abraham is expected to report to the team's training camp.
Cardinals general manager Steve Keim said Wednesday that Abraham is expected to report "sooner than next week."
The Cardinals play a road preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings on Saturday. Abraham will have to join the team by early Friday if he is to join the team for the trip.
Keim noted that Abraham will be treated like an injured player returning to the field upon his arrival.
“He’s got to work himself back into playing shape,” Keim said. “A guy coming off 11.5 sacks at 35 years old, you’d like to think that he’s going to still be able to contribute. He’s just got to get his legs back underneath him.”
Abraham was arrested and charged with DUI on June 29. There has been no word from Abraham or the Cardinals as to whether his absence from camp is related.
“I think it’s always a concern when there’s off-field issues to deal with,” Keim said. “At the same time, I think that it’s given him an opportunity to step back and look at the situation and realize that if he wants to continue playing football he’s got to get his life in order.”
Abraham is the NFL's active sack leader, tallying 133.5 sacks in his 14-year NFL career.
