Browns surprised Kizer was available at No. 52

The Cleveland Browns may have found their quarterback of the future Friday night, and the team's scouting personnel are awestruck at their good fortune.

Cleveland selected DeShone Kizer out of Notre Dame with the No. 52 pick in the draft, making him the fourth quarterback to be taken this year. Apparently, the Browns valued Kizer as their top quarterback all along.

"We were surprised that he was there and available to us at 52," Browns vice president of football operations Sashi Brown said to ESPN's Pat McManamon.

Kizer will compete against Cody Kessler, Kevin Hogan, and Brock Osweiler for the team's starting quarterback position.

"Obviously, he has the measurables," Browns head coach Hue Jackson said of Kizer. "He is a big, physical quarterback who can make all of the throws that I think anybody needs to make in the National Football League. He is intelligent. He has the characteristics that we are looking for."

Before snagging Kizer, Cleveland used its three first-round picks on Myles Garrett, Jabrill Peppers, and David Njoku.
