Titans' Casey takes issue with Henry skipping voluntary workouts
The word "voluntary" can have a very different definition, depending on who you ask around the NFL.
Voluntary offseason team workouts began for some teams this Monday. While most players volunteered to participate with their teammates, others volunteered to just skip it.
Among the skippers was Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, whose teammate did not appreciate his lack of attendance.
"It definitely puts that little check mark in the back of my mind and lets me know who I can count on, who I can't count on," Titans defensive lineman Jurrell Casey told Jason Wolf of USA TODAY about teammates who don't arrive ready to work on day one. "To see your teammates show up is definitely great."
Only one other Titans player decided to skip the first set of workouts - practice squad cornerback Bennett Okotcha.
Head coach Mike Mularkey said he would rather see all of his players at the workouts, but after 20 years as a coach, he doesn't get too worked up about it and has confidence Henry is working out just fine back in Alabama.
"It's their choice," Mularkey said. "Maybe I used to get disappointed. I have no control over it. It's their option. It's their choice. It's whatever they feel is best for them.
"I do know this - we've had coaches down at Tuscaloosa for the workout. I've seen some video of Derrick in the weight room. He's absolutely working out, so I know he's in great playing shape right now. I have no concerns about it, and won't."
