Saints continue to build defense with Trey Hendrickson

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints have selected defensive end Trey Hendrickson out of Florida Atlantic in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

The 6-foot-4, 266-pounder will help fill an immediate need for the Saints, as the club's defensive unit ranked among the NFL's worst against the pass last season. The pass rush was particularly dismal, finishing with just 30 combined sacks on the campaign, sixth-worst in the league.

Hendrickson was a force for Florida Atlantic throughout his career, especially in his final season, when he finished with 15 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks. He was also one of the best special teams players in college football, leading the country in blocked kicks with four.

Trey Hendrickson Bio

Position: DE
School: Florida Atlantic
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-4
Weight: 266 lbs.

Strengths

  • Worker. Registered 15 sacks in each of the last two seasons despite being without elite athletic abilities.
  • Does whatever is needed of him. Led FBS in blocked kicks with four in 2016.
  • Strong character. Team captain who received high praise for leadership skills.

Weaknesses

  • Doesn't have any natural traits that jump out from his tape. Mediocre height and arm length as well.
  • Lacks aggression. Doesn't show violent pass-rush moves or tackles. Pulls up to make safer tackles instead of making big hits.
  • Leverage. Without a great athletic skill set, Hendrickson can't afford to play as high as he did in college at the pro level.
