The Tennessee Titans are releasing veteran cornerback Jason McCourty, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports, citing a source.

McCourty, a sixth-round pick in the 2009 draft, spent each of his first eight NFL seasons in Tennessee. He confirmed his departure with a statement shared Thursday on Twitter.

The Titans were looking to rework McCourty's contract in advance of its final year, but the two sides couldn't agree to terms, a source told Tom Pelissero of USA Today.

Parting ways with the 29-year-old saves the Titans $7 million against the salary cap - and provides the club more motivation to address the defensive backfield early in the upcoming draft.

Among the top cornerbacks who could be available at No. 5 overall, the first of Tennessee's two first-round picks, are Ohio State standouts Marshon Lattimore and Gareon Conley.

McCourty started all but two games in his final season in Tennessee, tallying two interceptions, 12 passes defensed, and 69 tackles.
