Bears get raw TE Adam Shaheen in 2nd round

Jerry Lai / USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Bears have selected tight end Adam Shaheen out of Ashland with the 45th of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Chicago traded down from the 36th overall pick with the Arizona Cardinals to make the selection.

Shaheen is a project tight end from a small school and will require plenty of coaching and experience to hone his skills, but his rare ability to move at such a large size could turn him into a one-of-a-kind weapon. Shaheen will likely sit behind veteran Zach Miller as a rookie.

The Ashland product was the fifth tight end selected in the 2017 NFL Draft and second player taken by the Bears, after quarterback Mitchell Trubisky went second overall.

Adam Shaheen Bio

Position: TE
School: Ashland
College Experience: Junior
Height: 6-6
Weight: 278 lbs

Strengths

  • Dominant force at Ashland. Set a school record with 16 touchdowns.
  • Huge body for the position. A matchup nightmare for opposing defensive backs and tough to bring down in space.
  • Red-zone threat based on size. Could be used in goal-line packages until he polishes up the rest of his game.
  • Can be flexed out wide or play with his hand in the ground.
  • Sharp cutter. Gets in and out of breaks fluidly to get open on double moves.

Weaknesses

  • Didn't face top competition in college while playing at a Division II school.
  • Run-blocking needs work. Slow to engage with linebackers off the snap.
  • Needs to improve route adjustments. Gets caught standing still when covered at times.
  • Doesn't play with low enough pad level for his long frame.
