Cook slightly improves combine 40 time at pro day, doesn't re-run cone drill

Top running back prospect Dalvin Cook narrowly improved on the 40-yard dash time he turned in at the scouting combine when he ran the drill again at his pro day Tuesday.

Cook ran the 40 in 4.49 seconds at the combine. He was timed in the low 4.5s on his first attempt and mid-4.4s on his second by scouts in attendance at Florida State on Tuesday, according to NFL.com's Chase Goodbread.

Somewhat disappointingly, Cook didn't attempt to improve on his dismal combine times in the 3-cone drill (7.27 seconds) and 20-yard shuttle (4.53 seconds), times that place him in the ninth percentile among running backs in terms of athleticism.

Cook appears to have more than enough straight-line speed to succeed in the NFL, and his game tape certainly shows he's an explosive player.

But teams must decide how early is too early to draft a player whose overall athletic testing shows he is a below-average athlete. It's entirely possible Cook will slide out of the first round of the draft despite being considered a potential top-10 pick before the combine.
