Report: Kaepernick wants top backup deal, chance to compete for starting job

Kelley L Cox / USA TODAY Sports

Quarterback Colin Kaepernick remains unsigned and - as was previously believed to be the case with fellow free agent Adrian Peterson - the reason could be his asking price.

Kaepernick is holding out for an opportunity to compete for a starting role, two sources told ESPN's Dan Graziano. He'd reportedly also like to be paid the going rate for a "high-end backup quarterback or a low-end starter," which Graziano estimates at around $9 million-$10 million.

The list of teams that could meet those asks is short, as Graziano notes. Many teams that had a need at quarterback have already addressed the situation (Chicago Bears, New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers). The teams with question marks at the position (Houston Texans, Cleveland Browns, Denver Broncos) are either believed to be participating in the Tony Romo sweepstakes or possess a realistic alternative on their roster.
