Jaguars look past Dede Westbrook's multiple arrests, add him in 4th round

Mark D. Smith / USA TODAY Sports

The Jacksonville Jaguars selected wide receiver Dede Westbrook out of Oklahoma in the fourth round (110th overall) of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Westbrook was a Heisman Trophy finalist who likely slid in the draft due to multiple arrests on domestic violence complaints.

Before joining Oklahoma, he was accused of throwing the mother of his two children to the ground in 2012. A year later, he was accused of biting her arm and punching her.

Westbrook wasn't convicted of a crime in either incident.

The Jaguars did their homework, and will institute a strict set of standards for his behavior in the pros, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Dede Westbrook Bio

Position: WR
School: Oklahoma
College Experience: Senior
Height: 6-0
Weight: 178 lbs.

Strengths

  • Hands. Has one of the most natural set of hands in the draft, smoothly plucks the ball out of the air.
  • Playmaker. Scored 17 touchdowns on 80 catches last season.
  • Route speed. Runs well without the ball, goes full speed while running routes.

Weaknesses

  • Character concerns. Westbrook was reportedly arrested twice on domestic violence charges before his Oklahoma career.
  • Small sample size. More than doubled his production as a senior and was a Heisman finalist after being relatively unknown before the season.
  • Thin frame. Won't be able to out-muscle cornerbacks to the ball or do much damage as a blocker.
  • Undisciplined route-runner. Too reliant on speed and athleticism to beat coverage.
