The Miami Dolphins announced Tuesday a three-year contract extension with linebacker Kiko Alonso.

While there was some confusion over the initial reporting of the deal, it's worth $25 million over three years beginning after the 2017 season and includes $18.5 million guaranteed, according to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The contract tacks onto Alonso's tender that will pay him $3.9 million in 2017, meaning the 26-year-old is set to earn $28.9 million over the next four seasons. His annual average of $7.225 million will make him the NFL's ninth highest-paid inside linebacker, according to Spotrac.com.

Alonso made 115 combined tackles for the Dolphins in 2016 while adding two interceptions and a forced fumble. He was tendered as a restricted free agent at the first-round level, but will remain with the Dolphins for the long term.

Alonso should form a formidable linebacking duo alongside Lawrence Timmons, whom the Dolphins signed from the Pittsburgh Steelers.
