Report: Lynch didn't ask Seahawks for release
The rumor du jour in the NFL is that running back Marshawn Lynch will cut short his retirement in order to play for his hometown Oakland Raiders. The Raiders have a need at running back and Lynch is reportedly interested in resuming his playing career.
Lynch, though, remains property of the Seattle Seahawks, the team he was playing for when he retired. Jordan Schultz of the Huffington Post reported Friday morning that Lynch met with Seahawks coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Schneider to ask for his release, citing a source.
However, a league source told Gregg Bell of the Tacoma News Tribune that Lynch didn't ask the Seahawks' front office anything of the sort, though he was in the Seattle area Thursday and often stops by team headquarters when he's nearby.
Because Lynch is officially retired, he would first have to be reinstated by the NFL, as Bell notes.
Lynch famously retired during last year's Super Bowl. Should he return, he'd carry a $9-million cap hit for the Seahawks.
The popular running back has yet to speak publicly about his retirement or the possible resumption of his playing career.
