Hoyer hoping familiarity with Shanahan will help him earn 49ers' starting job

Brian Hoyer didn't sign with the San Francisco 49ers just to get some California sun - he came to play ball.

Few believe the 49ers are finished in their search for a starting quarterback as Hoyer has spent most of his career as a backup. Hoyer, however, is No. 1 on the depth chart for now and hasn't given up on his dream of playing as a starter in San Francisco.

"I'm going to have a really good opportunity to go in and be the starting quarterback, and that's all I'm looking for at this point in my career," Hoyer told PFT Live. "I'm not ready to sit there and be content going into the season being a backup. I wanted an opportunity to compete for a starting job."

The 31-year-old has just one season under his belt as a full-time starter, but given it was alongside new 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, Hoyer feels he has an advantage. Hoyer and then-offensive coordinator Shanahan worked together in 2014 as members of the Cleveland Browns, when the quarterback started 13 games.

Hoyer believes his familiarity with Shanahan's system - which would be difficult for any rookie to pick up quickly - will give the veteran an edge over the competition.

"I can go in there Day One and call the plays," said Hoyer. "I don't have to learn a whole new system."
