Redskins release veteran DE Jean Francois

Geoff Burke / USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Redskins have released defensive end Ricky Jean Francois, the team announced Wednesday.

The move saves the Redskins $3 million toward the cap.

The 30-year-old was an effective rotational player in 2016 for Washington, producing 1.5 sacks and 17 total tackles in 16 appearances, but it appears the team is looking to get younger on the defensive side of the ball.

The Redskins also announced the re-signing of defensive end Ziggy Hood and offensive lineman Vinston Painter.
