Kurt Warner to Osweiler: Take time to find right situation if you're released

Just days after former Houston Texans quarterback Brock Osweiler was blindsided by a trade to the Cleveland Browns, he fulfilled his commitment to Kurt Warner by taking part in the Hall of Famer's charity flag football tournament Saturday.

Warner, who's also gone from Super Bowl champion to failed free-agent acquisition, said he's been giving Osweiler advice on his new situation.

"You just have to step back and take a deep breath, and then find the best situation for you," Warner said Saturday, according to ESPN's Josh Weinfuss. "I think that's one of the hardest things when it comes to free agency or when you get released. It's so easy to go, 'I'm going to go here because it looks the best.'

"We've been talking a lot. It really has to come down to settle in and have a good conversation with whatever organization, and make sure it fits you. I think that what you find out in this biz, you see a lot of free agents go to different places and they disappear because it looked like a great fit, but once they got there, they found out it wasn't the right fit for them."

After his time with the St. Louis Rams, Warner had a poor season with the New York Giants in 2004, and struggled to mesh with the team before taking his time to find the right spot - the Arizona Cardinals. Warner told Osweiler not to rush to sign with a new team if he's granted his release, which is likely.

"With Brock, it's hard to do, because you want to find a home, you want to know where you're going to play," said Warner. "It's easy to panic and try to go and get it done quickly."
