Report: Peterson would consider signing with Patriots at discount

Will Adrian Peterson become the latest veteran star to chase a ring with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots?

The 31-year-old running back would be willing to consider signing with the defending Super Bowl champions at a discounted rate, sources close to Peterson told the Boston Herald.

Over the weekend, Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio reported that the market for veteran running backs like Peterson and Jamaal Charles wasn't as robust as the players or their agents would like it to be. However, if Peterson were willing to sign a team-friendly deal to play with a contender, it's hard to imagine he would remain available for long.

The report in the Herald cites Peterson's career earnings, which reportedly exceed $97 million, as a reason for his willingness to contemplate situation over dollars, as well as the previous success of older stars like Darrelle Revis and Chris Long, who helped New England win Lombardi Trophies during their runs with the team.

Peterson has played all 11 of his NFL seasons as a member of the Minnesota Vikings, and is two years removed from a 1,485-yard, seven-touchdown campaign.

Despite being one of the best backs of all time, Peterson is approaching the age of decline for rushers, which may have contributed to his struggles during an injury-shortened 2016 campaign. Peterson played in just three games last season, averaging a career-low 1.9 yards per carry.

Even with limited tread left on his tires, Peterson should be able to excel in LeGarrette Blount's power-back role in the Patriots' offense, splitting time with Dion Lewis and James White.

The negotiating period for free agents begins Tuesday, with free agency officially kicking off Thursday at 4 p.m. ET.
