49ers' Lynch plans to use broadcast experience in GM role

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch faces a sharp learning curve in his new role.

Lynch's hiring took many analysts and league personnel by surprise, as it's his first role in a front office capacity after previously working for FOX as a color commentator.

Ahead of free agency, Lynch said his broadcast experience prepared him for the 49ers' GM position in a truly unique way.

"I wasn't out there soaking up information from organizations as I went in their buildings, I was trying to be the best broadcaster I could be," Lynch said via Albert Breer of The MMQB. "But you're meeting with the quarterback, you're meeting with the head coach, the GM usually comes and finds you, you're meeting with coordinators on both sides, you’re meeting with finest players in the league. … So it challenges your mind."

Lynch said he's going into his new role with an open mind and taking it on a day-to-day basis.

"I'd caution you, one thing Monte Kiffin always said to us was that the worst three words any football player can say are, 'I got it.' I'm right at the beginning stages. We're right at the beginning stages. We're taking on challenges every day. But I can tell you, I’m not overwhelmed, each day I come in and there’s a routine," Lynch said.

"A priest once said to me, ‘Think about eating a huge steak, you can’t eat it all in one bite. You gotta take one bite at a time.’ And that’s the way we’re going through it. You can get overwhelmed in this job, particularly coming in late. I got all this to do, how do I do it? Instead, we’re just going about our business each day and taking things as they come. It does feel very natural."

Holding the No. 2 overall pick in this spring's draft, Lynch faces an uphill task in trying to bring the 49ers back to respectability, while the team hopes their unconventional hire adds a layer of calm and stability.
