Buccaneers GM: Aguayo 'needs to have a great camp' to remain on team
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have made it clear they will have no problem moving on from one of their second-round draft picks of a year ago.
Kicker Roberto Aguayo had a disastrous rookie season in the NFL. He was the most accurate kicker in college football history, but he made just 71 percent of his kicks in his first year in the pros and also missed two extra points.
Though the Buccaneers traded a third- and fourth-round pick to move up to the second round to select Aguayo, hoping the move would immediately improve their porous kicking game, general manager Jason Licht said Aguayo can expect some kicking competition in camp this year.
"We will do everything we can to bring in the best competition at that position," Licht said to Scott Reynolds of PewterReport.com at the Senior Bowl.
"I think (head coach Dirk Koetter) even said he's not locked into this roster. He needs to have a great camp just like all of our players, but we will continue to find the best competition that we can and ultimately have the best kicker that we can on this roster - whether it's him or somebody else."
Both the team and Aguayo endured their share of embarrassment due to his performance in 2016, but they continue to have hope the 22-year-old can turn things around.
"I do have confidence that he's going to be better," Licht said. "I have confidence that he's going to come out and he's going to improve."
