Now that Josh McDaniels has removed himself from contention, the San Francisco 49ers are believed to have set their sights firmly on capturing one of their other top head coaching targets.

The 49ers are "honing in on hiring" Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Seattle Seahawks offensive line coach Tom Cable is reportedly the other candidate for the job.

Whether Shanahan accepts the position, however, remains a question mark.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports Shanahan is interested in the job, but there's yet to be any offer or real discussions between the parties.

The fact that Atlanta remains in the playoffs could also delay proceedings, as the 49ers may need to wait until next week to bring in Shanahan so he can speak with general manager candidates, notes Rapoport.

The 49ers were regarded as the least enticing vacancy during the offseason, and it's possible that Shanahan - like McDaniels - opts to stay and lead one of the league's most talented offenses.

The Falcons highlighted Shanahan's credentials during a blowout win over the Seattle Seahawks in Saturday's divisional round, scoring 36 points and producing 422 total yards of offense against one of the best defenses in football.
