Report: Coughlin has final say over Jaguars' roster

Tommy Gilligan / USA TODAY Sports

Tom Coughlin's return to the Jacksonville Jaguars after a 15-year absence is about much more than making him a ceremonial figurehead.

Though general manager Dave Caldwell remains with the team (with a three-year contract that matches Couglin's and new head coach Doug Marrone's), it's Coughlin who will be the top authority on football matters.

As Ryan O'Halloran of The Florida Times-Union notes, only two other teams in the NFL are set up with an executive vice president-general manager-head coach structure in the front office. Of those, the San Francisco 49ers are looking for a new GM and head coach.

For the other, the Miami Dolphins, final say over the 53-man roster rests in the hands of head coach Adam Gase.

That won't be the case in Jacksonville. Both Caldwell and Marrone will report to Coughlin, O'Halloran notes, which means Coughlin will have final say over the roster.

It's a slightly awkward position for Caldwell, perhaps, but Coughlin has little experience on matters related to contracts and the day-to-day operations of an executive, so Caldwell will surely have a role.

He just won't have as much authority as before.
