Manning on Beckham's boat trip: 'You do things, you have to back it up'

Eli Manning suggested Odell Beckham Jr.'s Miami boat trip may have been a distraction a day after the New York Giants were ousted from the playoffs by the Green Bay Packers.

"If you do things, you have to back it up," Manning said on the topic of the criticism Beckham faced for spending last Monday with other Giants receivers on a boat in Miami.

"Maybe he put too much pressure on himself," Manning said of the highly competitive Beckham's poor performance against the Packers.

Before the game, Manning did his best to deflect questions about Beckham's time on the boat. He seemed to admit Monday that he did his best to avoid it becoming a distraction for the Giants.

"At the time, obviously you want to try and make a joke of it. Don't make it a distraction. We're about to go play a playoff game so you want everyone feeling good and right. I thought we handled it the proper way to get the best out of our guys."

Manning went on to say he doesn't believe the boat trip had any tangible impact on the Giants' performance against the Packers beyond the public perception that it did.

"I thought we had a great week of practice. Guys were making plays and running around. It was intense, focused, and everything good. Unfortunately, we just didn’t have it yesterday."
