Report: Marvin Lewis won't retire after season, plans to coach Bengals in 2017

Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis doesn't intend to retire at the end of the season and is planning to return to the Bengals for the 2017 campaign, a source close to Lewis told ESPN's Ed Werder.

Lewis' future has come into question after his team missed the playoffs for the first time in six years, and former Washington Redskins tight end and current ESPN radio host Chris Cooley suggested Sunday that Lewis is going to retire at the end of this year, citing a source in Cincinnati.

Lewis, the second-longest tenured coach in the NFL behind Bill Belichick, is contracted through the 2017 season. He said in December that he didn't fear for his job, pointing to his strong relationship with Bengals owner Mike Brown.

While Cincinnati has been one of the most consistent teams in the regular season over the past six seasons, they have yet to win a playoff game under Lewis - and that won't change this season as the Bengals were eliminated from postseason contention several weeks ago.

The regression of the team might cause Brown to consider moving on from Lewis. However, the head coach has had to deal with significant injuries to the likes of A.J. Green, Tyler Eifert, and Giovani Bernard, which could save his job.
